Nach der Lehre zum Bauzeichner mit dem Schwerpunkt Gestaltung, diplomierte Dirk Henning Braun, Jahrgang 1971, 1999 an der Fakultät für Architektur der Universität Stuttgart bei Prof. Stefan Behling und Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Werner Sobek mit Auszeichnung. In seiner Studienzeit arbeitete er u.a. als wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft am Institut für Leichte Flächentragwerke (ILEK) und wurde 1996 als Stipendiat in die Deutsche Studienstiftung aufgenommen. 

Bis 2002 arbeitete Braun bei Foster and Partners an verschiedenen internationalen und interdisziplinären Projekten, u.a. in Deutschland, England und Australien für Firmen wie E-Plus, die DEMAG AG, die Gerling Holding, Cisco Systems, McLaren Automotive und die Deutsche Bank. 

Von 2002 bis 2007 arbeitete Braun am Lehrstuhl für Baukonstruktion 2 der Universität Stuttgart und legte 2008 mit seiner Doktorarbeit “Bionisch inspirierte Gebäudehüllen” den Grundstein für seine weitere wissenschaftliche Entwicklung. Seine Dissertationschrift wurde 2008 von der Universität Stuttgart mit der höchsten Auszeichnung für Promotionen, dem Preis der Universität Stuttgart, ausgezeichnet. Braun ist damit der erste Promovend der Architekturfakultät der Uni Stuttgart, dem diese Ehre zu Teil wurde. 

Noch im selben Jahr erhielt Braun den Ruf zum Principal Lecturer an die renommierte DeMontfort University DMU in Leicester, UK, dem 2011 die Berufung zum Universitätsprofessor an der RWTH Aachen University mit der Leitung des Lehrstuhls für Gebäudetechnologie folgte, die er als Ordinarius bis heute ausübt.  

Parallel gründete er verschiedene interdisziplinäre Planungsteams, u.a. das Atelier BRAUNARCHITECTURE, die Braun Associates GmbH, die MakeHome GmbH und die Gebäudetechnologische Forschungs- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft GBT F+E GmbH. 

Er wurde u.a. mit dem Deutschen Solarpreis und dem Deutschen Stahlbaupreis ausgezeichnet, 2010 zum Landesvertreter der Architektenkammer Stuttgart gewählt und seitdem von zahlreichen ausländischen Universitäten zu Gastprofessor eingeladen. Professor Braun ist in verschiedenen Verbänden ehrenamtlich aktiv, u.a. seit 2015 als Vorsitzender des Fachbeirates Architektur des VDI Deutschland und bis 2020 als Vorstandsvorsitzender der VDI Gesellschaft Bauen und Gebäudetechnik und dauerhaftes Mitglied im Wissenschaftlichen Beirat des VDI Deutschland.

Seit 2018 ist Braun zudem gefragter Berater von US-amerikanischer Architekturfirmen, die seinen Rat zu den Themen Design, Nachhaltiges Bauen und energieeffizienten Betrieb von Gebäuden suchen. Seit 2020 hat das Studio BRAUNARCHITECTURE eine Dependance in Miami und Los Angeles.

With around 18 years of experience as an architect, company founder, university professor and researcher, my strengths in dealing with key global issues such as building, materials and the environment lie in clarifying and answering highly complex questions posed by building or research projects, the effects of which gradually unfold in the built environment. The conception, development and implementation of exemplary prototypes in my office and at the university are for me the basis for making the sustainable contribution of architects visible to our society. An important prerequisite for working at a high level in both research and business are my skills as an architect and communicator, whether in contact with students, staff and PhD students or in the exchange of ideas with other thought leaders, researchers or entrepreneurs, as well as my strong analytical and graphical thinking skills. These qualities have consistently paved the way for successful decision-making throughout my career, whether on complex building projects, intractable research questions, or in educating young creative minds on their path to doctoral degrees or the architectural profession. I was able to achieve my own degree in architecture at the University of Stuttgart as the best student below the minimum study time and, with subsequent support for highly gifted students as a scholarship holder of the German Study Foundation, I am to this day a full member of an extraordinary alumni foundation network. Directly after graduating, I was given the opportunity to work for Foster & Partners, Architects & Designers, in Great Britain's metropolis of London, and three years later I opened my own studio, BRAUNARCHITEKTUR. To date, we have been able to realise a number of building projects, some of them highly prestigious, for which my office has been awarded various prizes. Most recently, we received the Häuser AWARD in 2019 for one of the best 50 buildings in Germany. In 2007, I completed my doctoral thesis "Bionically inspired building envelopes" summa cum laude and received the 1st prize from the University of Stuttgart for it in 2008, a distinction that no other graduate of the Stuttgart Faculty of Architecture has achieved to date. In the same year, I received my first appointment as Principal Lecturer at one of the first architecture faculties in England - the prestigious De Montfort University - and then followed my second appointment in 2011 as holder of the newly installed Chair of Building Technology at RWTH Aachen University.
